Nellore: It is a shot-in-the arm for the YSR Congress party in Nellore district with District Collector N Srikanth on Saturday disqualifying eight zilla parishad territorial constituencies (ZPTCs) members for defecting to the Telugu Desam Party.

The YSRCP had wrested 31 of the total 46 ZPTCs. The TDP had to be content with wining in just 15 ZPTCs. However, eight members elected on YSRCP symbol, switched loyalties to the TDP in the run-up to the Zilla Parishad chief elections.

Though the eight YSRCP defectors supported the TDP, the ZP chief’s election ended in a tie. Bommireddy Raghavendra Reddy (YSRCP) was elected in the draw of lots on July 20.

Later, the YSRCP leadership lodged a complaint with the State Election Commission against the defectors. The SEC, after satisfying itself with the charge that the eight had indeed defected to TDP, directed the Collector to disqualify them.

The disqualified ZPTCs members are K Jyothy, T Venkatanarayana, Somayyagari Penchalayya, Shaik Salman Sharin, T Ramesh, U Prasad Goud, D Bharati and M Vijetha.

The Collector’s action against the defectors should be a lesson for all, said Raghavendra Reddy.
