Visakhapatnam: A Detailed Project Report (DPR) on the proposed Visakhapatnam metro rail project would be submitted to the State government, according to Principal Advisor to Andhra Pradesh Government on Metro Rail Projects E Sreedharan, here on Tuesday.

Sreedharan, who arrived in the city along with his technical team, said the State government would forward the DPR to the Union government for approval. The project works would begin within three months after getting approval from the Centre, he said. Sreedharan is in the city on a two-day visit to study the feasibility of the project for the city. He held an in camera meeting with the officials of Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA) and Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC).

Later, he told reporters that the Metro Rail Project would cover a stretch of 30 km in the city in the first phase, while it was 27 km in Vijayawada. He said there was every possibility reducing the project cost up to 25 per cent, if both Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada projects were taken up simultaneously. He said that the Centre had approved to 10 metro rail projects in the country. Sreedharan, who is the alumni of Andhra University, said the State government had asked him to prepare the DPR for Tirupati metro rail project separately.
