Visakhapatnam: In a midnight swoop on Andhra University, the rural police arrested Prof Jarri Appa Rao of Telugu department on the charges of having links with the outlawed Maoists. He was picked up from his official residence on the campus at about 11.30 pm in the presence of his wife Mynavathi and two children, according to Superintendent of Police K Praveen here on Thursday.
Rural SP Praveen Kumar briefing media on the circumstances leading to the arrest of the accused in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.
Various charges under IPC including explosive act and treason were slapped against him along with three others.
Disclosing the details, Praveen said the special police had specific information that some persons had brought explosive material, detonators, and mobile phones in a car and planned to dump them in a place from where it would be picked up by the Maoists.

The car was intercepted and 500 electrical detonators, 100 ordinary detonators, six bags of ammonium nitrate of explosive quality and three mobile phones, including a tab, were seized from Ganapathiraju Subbaraju and Vanapari Prasad.

Basing on their confession, two teams were dispatched --- one to Kakinada to pick up Dr Kovvuru Jagadish and another team to Andhra University campus where the associate professor was taken into custody. ``These four arrested persons have planned to supply explosive material to the outlawed Maoists at a strategic place in the agency. The explosive grade ammonium nitrate was sourced from Kattipudi in East Godavari,’’ the Superintendent of Police said.

He claimed the police had kept the profession under watch for last six months after it emerged that he was supplying non-explosive material like mobile phones, batteries, ear phones and other stationary material,

Answering a volley of questions on the role of the professor which led to wide spread protests in front of the SP office, Praveen said they had definite proof of Appa Rao’s involvement and his association with Maoist activist Makarri Ganesh. The Maoists had been demanding explosives from those engaged in mining in agency areas and they roped in Appa Rao to play the mediatory role.

Asked why the police had resorted to midnight knock, the SP sought to justify the police action by saying that the professor had the knowledge of his being tracked.
