Hyderabad: The two-judge PIL bench of the High Court at Hyderabad comprising of Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta and Justice PV Sanjay Kumar directed the revenue authorities of AP government to ensure that there was no illegal sand mining on the banks of the Cheyyeru river in Kadapa district. The bench was dealing with a writ plea filed by K Subarayudu questioning the action of the authorities in granting permissions to private parties for quarrying of sand in the Cheyyeru river without considering the resolutions and representations of various gram panchayats of Nandaluru and Penagaluru mandals and the DWACRA members against the sand quarrying operations. They termed sand mining in S.No.193, Komarunipalle village, Nandaluru Mandal, YSR Kadapa district as arbitrary, illegal, contrary to law, contrary to the provisions of AP WALTA Act and Andhra Pradesh Minor Mineral Concession Rules, the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.

It was contended that such permission was resulting in non-availability of even drinking water to the villagers and therefore must be stopped immediately. The bench granted four weeks’ time to the government to respond.
