Nellore: An alert was sounded in Sriharikota, Tada and other areas in Nellore district on Wednesday as police launched a hunt for five suspected activists of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI).
Security has been beefed up at Sriharikota Range (Shar), the satellite launching station of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and other vital installations in the district.
Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu police have launched joint operations on the border areas between the two states to track down the SIMI activists, suspected to be involved in bomb blast in Chennai last year.
The hunt was launched after intelligence agencies sounded alert that the suspected terrorists may have sneaked into Nellore district.
Five terrorists, identified as Izhuddin alias Ajay, alias Riaz, alias Rahul, Mhaboobu Guddu alias Malhik, Hussain Sadhik alias Kumar, Amjad, Aslam alias Md Aslam and Sohab alias Jeelal, alias Santosh reportedly escaped from the custody of Tamil Nadu police.
They are all suspected to be activists of the banned SIMI. They are also suspected to have been involved in bomb blast in Chennai last year.
On being alerted that the terrorists could have sneaked into Nellore district, the police intensified search in Tada region as it is on the border of Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu police made available the photographs of suspected terrorists to Nellore police.
Speaking to The Hans India, Nellore Superintendent of Police Senthil Kumar dismissed the reports of terrorists sneaking into district as exaggerated. It is only general sharing of information among the police stations and there was no specific alert, the SP added. However, security was tightened in view of visits of VIPs in Sullurpet town for flamingo festival.
