Hyderabad: A two-judge bench of the High Court at Hyderabad on Friday directed the state governments of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh to file a report on the steps being taken to prevent officers/offices for unauthorized usage of air-conditioners in the government offices and their instrumentalities in both states.

The bench comprising Justice Vilas Afzulpurkar and Justice B Sivasankara Rao was dealing with a contempt petition filed by Forum for Better Living of Warangal represented by D Padmaja. The present contempt petition was filed when the authorities failed to act in accordance with an earlier order of the court. The High Court in April 2013 had ordered action to be taken against officials for misusing office air-conditioners.

The petitioner complained that it was the duty of the governments to ensure during power crises that the air-conditioners were not misused and that in spite of an earlier order, the governments had failed to do so.

Telangana state Advocate General K Ramakrishna Reddy informed the court that the Telangana government had issued a notice in this regard. P Venugopal Advocate General of Andhra Pradesh also informed the court that the state government had taken necessary steps. The bench directed both the advocate generals to file the affidavits explaining the steps within 8 weeks.
