Kakinada: The Endowments Department has initiated steps to take back property in an extent of 38.8 acres worth Rs 200 crore as per market value. The property in a prime area in the city on Pithapuram road near Nagamalli Thota and in Ramanayyapeta was donated by a philanthropist, Pydah Suryanarayana, for better utilisation for endowment purposes.

According to Endowments Department authorities, property in 38.8 acres was given on lease for three purposes. Of this, 14 acres was for Yoga Centre, 11 acres for old age home and the remaining 13.8 acres for spiritual activities in 2005. The donor noticed that the property was being utilised for other purposes instead.

In addition, Endowments Department deputy commissioner D Bhramaramba, who took charge two months ago, noticed certain irregularities in the form of sub-letting by the lessees. In addition, it was also noticed that there was irregular payment of lease amount despite High Court directives. According to sources, some staff members of the department kept the issue of payment of meagre lease amount a secret for personal gains.

Noticing the unauthorised sub-letting in violation of lease norms, the deputy commissioner issued notices to the lease holders to hand over the properties back to the Endowments Department. As part of this measure, notice boards were set up at these sites on Monday stating that the department would be taking back the properties.

However, it was learnt that some political leaders, including a former MLA, were exerting pressure on the authorities to stop the takeover of the properties by the department. The deputy commissioner said on Monday that she was committed to get back the properties and expressed confidence that she would succeed in her attempt with the support of her superiors. When contacted, Kakinada rural MLA Pilli Ananta Lakshmi said that she would provide all cooperation in protecting endowments and government properties as the lands in this case were in her constituency.
