Ongole (Prakasam): A shocking incident of an uncaring son abandoning his mother on a railway platform here came to light on Friday. The 72-year-old Gammalampadu Ademma of Ponduru village under Tangutur mandal in the district was, however, rescued by her granddaughter. It was on Christmas Day when the old woman’s son took her to Ongole, promising to secure medical treatment for her.

After landing in the town, he told her mother to stay put on the railway platform and promised to return soon. But he never returned. Two months elapsed and Ademma somehow survived under open sky in cold weather. An auto rickshaw driver, who found the old woman being seriously ill, admitted her to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS). There too she was forced to stay at the bicycle parking area while eating morsel of food given by visitors to hospital.

On knowing the plight of Ademma, her granddaughter (daughter’s daughter) went in search of her grandmother and found her in a pitiable condition at the RIMS. She assured Ademma of all care and took the old woman with her. Though the son, who allegedly inveigled her into transferring all the property to him, abandoned her on the platform, her granddaughter came to her rescue. Hussaini Bee, a local woman, lashed out at Ademma’s children for abandoning their mother during her old age. It is a shame that mothers were being treated like this by their ungrateful children, she said.
