Vijayawada: All-India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh Digvijay Singh on Friday admitted that the people of Andhra Pradesh have punished Congress in the last elections for bifurcation of the State. Speaking at the inaugural session of the two-day Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) meeting, Digvijay said that the Congress was forced to bifurcate the State as all other parties have given letters in favour of division.

The Congress had expressed its views at the end and had executed what all other parties have asked for. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had started campaign for bifurcation in 1998 saying “one vote – two States” while the Telugu Desam Party had given two letters supporting bifurcation. The YSR Congress too had favoured the division, Digvijay said and regretted that the people have excused all other parties and punished the Congress.

Stating that the Congress had made several promises to Andhra Pradesh at the time of bifurcation, the AICC general secretary wanted the leaders to mount pressure on the MPs, State and the Central governments to fulfill those promises. Construction of Polavaram Project, funding for capital, several Central institutions and building revenue gap, were some of the promises that were made to the State in the bill.

He wanted the Congress leaders from the State to fight for the implementation of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act. Digvijay Singh said that the Congress had suffered a great debacle in the last Parliament election for different reasons. The party was now passing through difficult time and it was the responsibility of everyone to work hard for its revival. He equated the present status of the party to that of the time when it was founded.

“When the party was formed, there was no hope of coming to power. It was only because of the sacrifices of several persons, the Congress gained power and remained in power for 60 years,” he said. The AICC general secretary asked the leaders and cadre to discuss about strengthening of the party from the booth level, plan for its revival and winning the hearts of the people and restore the party in power.

The party would submit a report to AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi by February 20 after due consultations with everyone in the party in all 29 States. APCC president N Raghuveera Reddy, AICC observer Thirunavukkarasu and several Congress leaders from the State were present.
