Kakinada: The rise in population to five plus lakh due to merger of several surrounding villages brought out new problems to residents of Kakinada city in the last few years. Apart from poor sanitation, the stray dog menace and free movement of pigs compounded their woes. Local leaders made several representations to the authorities to take appropriate action in this regard. But in vain.

One of the main reasons is lack of elected body to the civic corporation as no elections were conducted after expiry of previous term in the middle of the year 2010. Lack of accountability on part of authorities concerned on the issues confronting the public in the town said to be the other reason.

The public had only one opportunity in the year 2005 to elect the municipal body after it attained corporation status. They appealed to the authorities to take up vaccination and sterlisation of dogs at least to check dog bites. According to sources the stray dog population almost touchéd 10, 000 in the town.

The election to corporation was not conducted in 2014 due to pending court clearance over the merger of suburb village Turangi with corporation. Due to this, public are deprived of the updates on issues relating to corporation’s activities relating to amenities and developmental works.

There is a strong feeling among the cross section of the people about the negligence on the part of authorities with regard to stray dog and pig menace.

However, the municipal officials quote that as the court orders are in force they are unable to initiate measures to curb the stray dog menace.

The Kakinada City CPI(M) secretary Palivala Veerababuu appealed to the authorities to take up vaccination and sterilisation of stray dogs on war-footing as the number of dog bite cases rose in the last couple of years. The municipal authorities cannot shirk their responsibilities by simply quoting the court orders, he lamented.

Social activist Dusarlapudi Ramona Raju observed that the municipal authorities should set up a dog welfare centre to feed the stray dogs as per the ‘Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act’. He also said that the authorities should take appropriate measures in keeping the pigs away from the town.
