Kakinada: Rice exports to international markets have slowed down this year, according to rice millers here. But the rice milling industry has faced no difficulty in export rice to other States. The rice millers, who can call shots at the State-level, were initially confused with the change in levy policy.

The millers were perplexed on being told that they could sell 75 per cent of rice procured after supplying 25 per cent of it to the government. The rice millers are a very powerful lobby and they are in a position to call the shots. The government has given them permission to sell rice anywhere not only within the country but also abroad.

In the present rice procurement year which continues till the end of September, the millers as on February 19 supplied one lakh tonnes of rice to FCI towards levy and another 1.3 lakh tonnes to Civil Supplies Department towards custom milling. East Godavari Rice Millers’ Association president and former combined State unit general secretary Ambati Ramakrishna Reddy said on Friday the millers had become accustomed to the new system of procurement.
