Narmada Bachao Andolan leader and social activist Medha Patkar plans to visit nine of the 29 villages in the capital region of Andhra Pradesh and interact with farmers and agricultural workers on April 9.

This will be Medha Patkar’s second visit to the region and she will also address a public meeting at Penumaka of Undavalli mandal in Guntur district. During her first visit she had highlighted and brought focus on the unscientific method of land pooling which led the AP government to correct its methods to avert legal reverses.

State convener of the National Alliance for People’s Movements (NAPM) B. Ramakrishna Raju said she was visiting the capital region following requests from the locals there about government forcing farmers to give up their land for the capital.

The government is destroying a vibrant, Rs. 1,000-crore economy and has acquired the lands by circumventing the provisions of the land acquisition act under the tag of land pooling. The fertile area boasts of about 150 different types of flowers, fruits and vegetables.
