Special status to AP

Hyderabad: Anantapur MP J C Diwakar Reddy, who never hesitates to speak his mind, on Saturday, questioned the Union Ministers Arun Jaitley and M Venkaiah Naidu about the status of special category status to Andhra Pradesh. Speaking at the foundation of National Customs, Excise and Narcotics Academy at Somandevpally Diwakar Reddy said it was the Congress and the BJP which had jointly promised the people of Andhra Pradesh that special category status would be given after the bifurcation of the state.

Though about 10 months had elapsed, there was been no progress towards keeping the promise. What was significant here was JC questioning the Union Ministers in the presence of the AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. Other Central Ministers, Ashok Gajapathyraju and Sujana Chowdary, were also present on the dais. Reacting to this, Jaitely said the Centre was committed to implementing the AP State Reorganisation Act 2014 in toto.

He also said the Centre would help Andhra Pradesh complete the Polavaram project. Appreciating the work of Chief Minister, the Union Minister said Naidu had managed to secure 500 acres of land in just nine months for the Academy. Later, AP Chief Minister said they had succeeded in establishing the Academy to the drought-affected Anantapur district. He also promised to ensure water to Anantapur district after completing Polavaram project within four years.

He urged the Union Minister to set up Bangalore-Hyderabad Industrial corridor. Speaking to media persons at the airport here, Venkaiah Naidu said that the Centre had advised the banks to re-schedule loans to the farmers affected drought and also directed speedy settlement of insurance claims. “We had requested the previous government to take initiatives to help farmers when we were in Opposition, but could not succeed,” he said.
