Visakhapatnam: Following the State government’s direction to convince farmers of Bhogapuram area who were refusing to offer their lands for the proposed Greenfield Airport, HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao took the initiative of convening a high-level meeting with Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana, Health Minister Kamineni Srinivas, Rural Development Minister K Mrunalini, Bhogapuram MLA and former Minister Pathiwada Narayanaswami Naidu, Collectors of Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram and revenue officials here at the Government Circuit House on Sunday.

This was the first time that the senior TDP MLA representing Bhogapuram Assembly Segment Pathiwada Narayanaswami Naidu was taken into confidence during discussions on the airport. Earlier, former Deputy Mayor of GVMC K Dorababu questioned why the senior party leader’s views were not sought on the issue.

Later, Srinivasa Rao told reporters that this was a preliminary meeting and the representatives of Rites Consultancy were already on the job of technical aspects and a decision would be taken basing on the Draft Project Report. The report is expected within a fortnight. “Without hurting the sentiments of the farmers, a final decision on the airport would be taken,” he added.

Earlier, during the high-level meeting, the Minister asked the Collectors of Vizag N Yuva Raj and Vizianagaram M M Nayak to identify lands up to 5,000 acres in the first phase. Focus should be laid on identifying government or assigned lands. There should not be any trouble to the local people or farmers in the process, he maintained.

He asked the Collectors to select the best system for providing compensation to farmers (including Land Pooling System) in case of acquisition of lands from farmers. He directed the Collectors to issue instructions to the Department of Registrations not to register lands around the proposed airport in Bhogapuram at not more than the government rate.

Managing Director of Infrastructure Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Sambasiva Rao, Vuda Vice-Chairman Baburao Naidu, Vizianagaram Joint Collector Rama Rao, Superintendent of Police Navdeep Singh, representatives of Rites Consultancy, New Delhi, and ZPTC and MPTC members of Bhogapuram were also present.
