Hyderabad: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) on Thursday adopted a unanimous resolution demanding the Union government to confer the country’s highest civilian award - Bharat Ratna - on the matinee idol and TDP founder-president NT Rama Rao recognising his services to the nation as well as to the film industry.
Supporting the resolution moved by NTR’s son and party MLA N Balakrishna at the Mahanadu coinciding with the 92th birth anniversary of the departed leader, party Chief N Chandrababu Naidu said that NTR deserved to be honoured with Bharat Ratna Award.
Recalling the services rendered to the society in the capacity of a political party leader as well as a film icon, he said NTR created sensation in the national politics by floating National Front – a conglomeration of anti-Congress parties and the same trend continued in the form of formation of NDA at national level.
NTR ushered in reforms administration and governance in the form of abolition of Patwari and Patel system and introduction of Mandal system gave a new lease of life to the Backward communities who were given political opportunities at the grass root- level, Naidu said and added that food security scheme launched by the previous Congress-led UPA was the brainchild of NTR who launched Rs 2 a-kg- rice in his dispensation.
“NTR was the founder of many welfare schemes adopted by many states and even union governments." Paying glowing tributes to the departed leader, Balakrishna said NTR succeeded to win hearts of people in a short time as a political leader only because of his noble motive to serve people.
No leader had matched NTR’s charisma, he said and added that his father surpassed many hurdles to reach the pinnacle of both his film and political careers. NTR was the inspiration to all TDP leaders. He urged Naidu to complete the long pending Handri Neeva project, conceived by NTR during his heydays and solve drinking and irrigation water scarcity in Rayalaseema districts.
