Seeks MLC polls on ratio basis

Anantapur: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday, proposing changes in the election system, said the issue of Legislative Council elections from the Assembly constituency would be taken to the notice of the Election Commission. He demanded that the MLC polls should be held on proportional representation (‘damasha’).

Inaugurating the second phase of the Janmabhoomi-Maa Vooru programme at Gotluru in Anantapur district, he questioned the need for secret ballot in the council polls when the elected members of the Assembly were casting their votes.

Naidu pointed out that ‘damasha’ elections were being held in the Rajya Sabha and that if such polls were conducted the machinations of ‘corrupt’ elements could be checked.

He claimed that some persons were trying to gain by resorting to misinformation on the issue of MLC polls. The Chief Minister accused the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) of ‘purchasing’ five Telugu Desam MLAs and yet trying to get cases registered against the TDP. Naidu claimed the YSRCP leaders had no right to criticise him.

Without naming party chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy, he said how could a person going round jails after getting involved in 16 cases resort to criticism. He described as ‘unfortunate’ the YSRCP joining hands with the TRS and criticising him. He contended that TS Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had agreed that injustice has been done to Andhra Pradesh.

“When I suggest that we should hold discussions to solve the problems of the two States, TRS is trying to ensure that the Telangana sentiment sustained in that State.” Naidu, while reiterating that the State division was not proper, said that injustice was done to Andhra Pradesh, and alleged that it was ‘ruined by the Congress misrule’. He blamed the State’s fate to the unholy alliance of the Congress, TRS and YSRCP while accusing the Congress and the TRS of trying to stall the development.

The Chief Minister criticised the YSRCP for trying to block the supply of the Godavari water to Rayalaseema through the Pattiseema project. He attributed criticism on irrigation projects to the efforts of some persons to resort to corruption in the works.

Naidu, who landed in Puttaparthi aboard a special plane, reached Gotluru by helicopter. He addressed the Gram Sabha. In view of the council election code none was allowed onto the dais except Naidu, the Sarpanch and officials. Ministers Kamineni Srinivas, Palle Raghunath Reddy, Paritala Sunitha and people’s representatives of the district were present. Naidu did not make any promises to the people in view of the election code.
