Hyderabad: Union government has decided to develop “model district hospitals” that would be on a par with the corporate hospitals under the National Health Mission mode. A workshop on “Model Health Districts” was held in New Delhi last week. The Union government has selected 24 districts in 11 states to develop Model Health Districts.

The National Health Mission has selected Mahabubnagar and Medak districts in Telangana State and Guntur and Vishakhapatanam districts in Andhra Pradesh as Model Health districts. A team will visit these districts soon to identify the gaps and by March 2016 the hospitals will get all the facilities.

The Centre has rolled out several national health programmes to improve the health indicators. The mission is intended to reduce mother and child mortality rate to minimum and improve health indicators. At present there is not even a single district in the country which can be showcased as a model district where all services are delivered as per the protocols and guidelines of the Union government.

According to sources, the concept of developing model health districts is intended to provide quality medical care to the poor and vulnerable sections of the society. Despite proactive initiatives by the states, gaps still remains, the sources said. District being the fulcrum of service delivery when it comes to public health systems, there is a need to look in detail about the various gaps and bottlenecks in service delivery and attaining the targets.

Initiatives and best practices of the Union government and the states need to be prioritised to improve the critical health indicators. “Within the district a community health centre, one 24x7 primary health centre and one sub-centre will be selected in consultation with the district Chief Medical Officer. This will help establish linkage with the community.

National Health Systems Resource Centre (NHSRC) along with the State’s RMNCHA partners working in the district will train the district managers and clinical staff on their role and activities to be undertaken at local level,” said a doctor.
