Visakhapatnam: The Andhra Pradesh government on Saturday signed an MoU with Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) for imparting skill development courses for college students at the State Teachers Day celebrations held at Andhra University Engineering College grounds here.

Higher Education Secretary Sumita Dawra and TISS Director S Parasuraman exchange papers after signing MoU as CM N Chandrababu Naidu and Education Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao look on

The MoU documents were exchanged between Secretary of Higher Education Sumita Dawra and TISS Director S Prasuraman in the presence of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and ministers Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Ch ayyanna Patrudu and K Atchannaidu. As a pilot project, the TISS will impart skill development courses, which could fetch employment, to over 30,000 students of 100 colleges in the first phase.

If the project is proved to be worthy and successful, the scheme would be extended to other colleges in the State. After three years, the students would get a parallel degree from TISS, Sumita Dawra said. Speaking on the occasion, the TISS Director said the project would enhance the employability of the students as their institute would tie up with industries and other institutions while imparting skill courses.

“The skill development courses would subsequently become part of the college curriculum after TISS moves out,” Parasuraman said. Skilled persons would hasten the development of the State as already the government had chalked out a huge map for the development in various spheres keeping main focus on IT and related industries, he added.

TISS has its main campus based in Mumbai and operates campuses in Hyderabad, Guwahati and Tuljapur in Osmanabad district of Maharashtra. The Master's degree programme in Human Resource Management and Labour Relations offered at the TISS Mumbai campus remains one of the most sought after and prestigious programmes in the field of HR in India.
