SPECIAL category STATUS

Vijayawada: The special category status that was promised to the State at the time of bifurcation has become the bone of contention between the ruling combine and the Opposition. The opposition parties have isolated the ruling combine – The Telugu Desam Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party – in the State.

The failure of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to ask for special category status at the Amaravati foundation ceremony and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speak on it had given enough chance for the opposition parties to target the ruling combine.

Though the Chief Minister had clarified that his intention was to ask for special category status in the presence of the Prime Minister, it did not go well with the people. Even the TDP ranks are unwilling to buy the Chief Minister’s argument that the Prime Minister would grant the special category status to the State.

Interestingly, senior Telugu Desam leader from the city, Jasti Sambasiva Rao, a corporator in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation, had written an open letter to Modi requesting him to live up to the expectations of the people and fulfil the poll promise. Interestingly, Guntur MP Jayadev Galla too had expressed his displeasure over the Prime Minister’s silence.

The CPM, the CPI, the Congress and the YSR Congress have already come on to the streets expressing displeasure over the denial of the special category status to the State. The Lok Satta and other smaller parties have joined the major opposition parties expressing solidarity and pressing for special category status, special package to the backward districts and revenue gap filling.

While the Left, the CPI and the CPM, take it up as an issue, the Congress looks at it as an opportunity to win over the confidence of the people. The main Opposition party in the Assembly, the YSR Congress, is far behind in this, but for a couple of agitations held here and there by the leaders and the press statement by the party chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy. The party is yet to pick up the issue and fight targeting both the TDP and the BJP.

Given the seriousness of the issue and the sentiments attached to the special category status, it is to be seen how the ruling combine would face the challenge, particularly the Telugu Desam in the State as the BJP has no bigger stakes in Andhra Pradesh.
