Visakhapatnam: Bike riders not using helmets died in more number in the road accidents than others, according to the data available with the RTA officials.

In spite of series of campaigns by NGOs, educational institutions, police and RTA, the motor cycle riders are yet to realise the importance of the helmet. The helmet rule is strictly followed in Naval area, where it is mandatory for the defense personnel and civilian employees.

According to the statistics available with the RTA, of the 3,100 people, who died in road mishaps in the State between January 2014 and September 30, 2015, 90 per cent of them died for not wearing helmets. This includes pillion riders also. Only 10 per cent of them died though they wore the head gear.

Reports said only 32 per cent two-wheeler riders in the State wear helmets in spite of the enforcement and the rest ignore it. The officials said if both the rider and pillion rider wear the helmet, the accident death rate would fall by 70 per cent.
