Visakhapatnam: The Vizag Film Society, Environmental Film Club and Human Rights Forum are jointly screening a seminal film on climate change ‘This Changes Everything’ (90 minutes) at 10 am on Sunday at Visakha Public Library, Dwarakanagar.

Directed by journalist Avi Lewis and inspired by Naomi Klein’s international best-selling book of the same name, ‘This Changes Everything’ is an urgent dispatch on climate change. It contends that the greatest crisis humanity has ever faced also offers the opportunity to address and correct the inhumane systems that have created it.

Filmed in 211 days in nine countries and five continents for four years, the film is an epic attempt to re-imagine the vast challenge of climate change. It presents seven powerful portraits of communities on the front lines from Montana’s Powder River Basin in the US, to the Alberta Tar Sands in Canada, from the historic Sompeta struggle in Andhra Pradesh to Beijing and beyond.

Interwoven with these stories is Klein’s narration, connecting the carbon in the air with the economic system that put it there. Throughout the film, Klein builds to her most controversial and exciting idea that “We can seize the existential crisis of climate change to transform our failed economic system into something radically better”.

The film contains extraordinary detail and rich cinematography. Unlike many works about the climate crisis, this is not a film that tries to scare the audience into action. Rather, it aims to empower. Provocative, compelling and accessible to even the most climate-fatigue viewers, the film reflects on the ties between human beings, the kind of lives people really want, and why the climate crisis is at the centre of it all.
