Visakhapatnam: Floral tributes were paid to Architect of Constitution Dr B R Ambedkar on his death anniversary, observed by various educational institutions, political parties, SC, ST welfare associations and non-government organisations here on Sunday.

At a programme held on the Andhra University campus, Vice-Chancellor Prof G S N Raju garlanded the statue of Ambedkar at two places and paid tributes.

Speaking on the occasion, he said Dr Ambedkar had provided the Constitution to make the total administration in the country easy and fair.

Rector E A Narayana felt that the Indian Constitution was nothing but a holy book of the country as Dr Ambedkar was of the opinion that education will be the only tool for any development.

Registrar V Umamaheswara Rao called upon the youth to drive away caste discrimination from society and to uphold societal values.

Law College Principal A Subrahmanyam, president of SC, ST, BC Employees’ Association Dr Sharon Raju, Prof Y Satyanarayana, Prof M V R Raju, Prof A Rajendra Prasad and Prof K R Rajani also spoke.

Prof M Sundara Rao, Prof Ch V Ramachandra Murty, Prof Ch V Ratnam and Dr N A D Paul were also present.

MP K Haribabu, MLA P Vishukumar Raju and many BJP leaders garlanded the statue of Dr Ambedkar at LIC Square and paid floral tributes.

At another event held at the City Congress Committee office, president Behara Bhaskar Rao, City Mahila Congress Committee president Pedada Ramani Kumari, senior leader Guntur Bharati, NSUI district co-ordinator Konda Rajiv Gandhi, party leaders Sathish Varma, G Sreenu, K Rami Reddy, K Gopal Reddy and Srinivasa Reddy paid homage after garlanding the portrait of Dr B R Ambedkar. Later, Bhaskar Rao said that Ambedkar had strived hard for the upliftment of poor and the downtrodden.

At another meeting held at Relliveedhi near Jagannadhapuram in ward No 31, City Congress secretary K Gopal Reddy and ward leader G Mohan Rao garlanded the statue and paid tributes. Later, the leaders distributed steel vessels and fruits to the poor.

Ambedkar death anniversary was also observed by the members of Sri Gayatri Welfare and Cultural Youth Academy. Among others, Dr Lakshminarayana of Nature Cure Hospitals and the academy founder R Ravi Kumar garlanded the portrait of Ambedkar and paid rich tributes.
