Chittoor: Common people are feeling the pinch to purchase vegetables as prices have skyrocketed in the city. They are purchasing less quantity of vegetables for their household needs from local Rythu Bazaars. People are expressing anger over officials concerned for no taking measures to control spiraling of vegetable prices. It is learnt that certain vendors in the municipal vegetable market have formed a syndicate and increasing the prices of the vegetables.
Despite abundant supply of vegetables and fruits from the western parts of the district where horticulture crop is predominant source of income, the vendors in the local vegetable market are selling the vegetables at higher prices. Even the cost of leafy vegetables has been hiked by three times. Common people are finding it difficult to purchase fruits as prices have skyrocketed. In recent times, criticisms over the usage of the carbide in ripening the fruits have angered fruit lovers.
There are more than 400 stalls situated at the municipal vegetable market. About 500 families, who are dependent on the vegetable market, have reportedly gained huge income. The municipal officials have failed to control the spiraling of vegetable prices in the municipal vegetable market as they have colluded with the vendors. The Commissioner and Director of Marketing, District Joint Collector, District Supply Officer and the Assistant Director of Marketing have become mute spectators over the soaring prices of vegetables at Rythu Bazaars here. City people are requesting the District Collector to take immediate action for controlling the prices of vegetables in the local municipal market and in Rythu Bazaars here.
