GVMC to impose fine for public urination

Visakhapatnam: To contain the menace of open urination, public defecation and littering on the public streets in view of Vizag becoming a Smart City, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has decided to impose fines soon.Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, Municipal Commissioner Praveen Kumar disclosed that a penalty of Rs 100 would be imposed on individuals caught reliving themselves in the open places for the first time, Rs 200 would be imposed for the second time and goes on increasing.
Those who litter on the streets would be penalised with a fine of Rs 200 for the first time which would be increased from the second time onwards. Asked under which Act they start imposing fines, he replied that there is a provision in the Municipal Corporation Act.
He further stated that they first sensitise the people for a few months through advertising on FM radios, electronic and print media besides displaying of wall posters about the fines. “We seek the cooperation of Resident Welfare Associations, NGOs, Swachh Bharat ambassadors as well as Slum Dwellers’ Welfare Associations to make Vizag a beautiful city by containing the menace of open defecation.
“By identifying 350 houses as a unit, we deploy more men and machinery with a nodal officer for every ward, we take up door-to-door garbage collection, sweeping, transportation of waste material and drainage clearance works. We have arranged 250 additional iron dumper bins in the city, Praveen Kumar explained. To a query, he said that the construction of 9,000 toilets was completed and another 3,000 are in progress, while 50 areas were identified where open defecation is to be prevented and sanctioned 54 community toilets there.
