Cock-fights around the corner

Vijayawada: Sankranthi is the season of cock-fights in the coastal districts of the state. This annual sport attracts many enthusiasts, mostly politicians, as it involves crores of rupees in betting.

With just a few days left for the festival, the demand for roosters bred with quality and expensive feed are much sought after in the region. The price of each cock depending on the variant is being sold for up to a lakh and more even on the online platform.

Dega, Kakidega, Kakinemali, Kodikaki, Seetuva, Yerra Dega, Tellanemali, and Nemali Pingala are some of the most sought-after breeds that are used for fighting. All those breeds carefully nurtured are now being sold for whopping amounts on pet selling online portals and other general sites that sell animals along with pre-owned goods. There are numerous views for the advertisements that were posted in respective sites, which prove the point.

Owners of these special breed roosters are taking advantage of the internet services to sell them and earn out of it. The variants are available anywhere from Rs 5,000 to Rs 1 lakh.

K Balaji, resident of Krishnalanka and owner of a couple of roosters, says: “We rear them with good food and provide safe environs. Though we do not participate in cock-fighting personally, there are people who approach us for cocks in the month of January. We take advantage of the demand and make money out of it, eventually’’.

Another trader K Venkateswarlu, a Bhaimavaram resident and has been in the business for the past few years shared, “I sell the birds every year in December-January. I posted advertisements on a site just a month ago and there were 1,011 views till Tuesday. There have been many calls inquiring about them.’’

Y Uday Chowdary, who got over 6,000 views for his advertisement to sell his Kakidega breed roosters, said, “I have been getting many calls from other districts. The problem is about mobility. I answered about 300 calls ever since I had posted the advertisement. I quoted Rs 42,000 and the customers were ready to offer anything for them. They were showing interest on the domestic roosters which we do not sell though,’’ he said.
