Visakhapatnam: Vizagites welcomed the New Year with style. Despite police restrictions, people consumed Rs 2.5 crore worth liquor till clock clicked zero hours.

The police booked 241 motorists for drunken driving and other offences. The traffic police deployed over 50 teams at strategic places in the city from 9 pm on December 31 to 2 am on January 1 to check drunken driving, said ADCP (Traffic) K Mahendra Patrudu.

He said fortunately like last year, there were no New Year eve celebrations related fatal accidents. But a few were injured in non-fatal accidents at a few places in the city. Out of total 241 cases, a majority of cases were recorded on the Beach Road stretch only, the ADCP said. The city’s hotels and some clubs purchased liquor in large quantities on December 31st while the wine shops and bars in the city did a brisk business on the account of the New Year celebrations.

The excise officials said that chilling weather conditions pushed up the sales of liquor such as brandy, whisky and rum and the youngsters preferred beers and softer spirits.

The costlier foreign brands were sold mostly to big hotels, super markets and pubs. Last year during the same period (December 31st and January 1) a total of Rs 2 crore liquor was sold and this year the business increased to Rs 2.5 crore. Retail liquor vendors said alcohol consumption has increased compared to previous years. The vendors said people mostly preferred brandy and rum.
