Srikakulam: A thick fog enveloping Srikakulam town for the past two days. Though fog in winter is not unusual, most road users felt that the poor visibility even at 9 am could be due to pollution. While indiscriminate carbon emissions and industrial pollution are reasons for heavy fog in winter, opined environmentalist K Babu Rao.

Heavy fog is a sign of rising pollution level, he explained. Pesticides, pharmaceutical industries and breweries are situated within 20 km radius around Srikakulam town which are releasing pollutants and dust particles into the air, he observed.

Thick fog in winter is not good for mango orchards and black and green grams being cultivated in rabi, said assistant director of agriculture department K Raviprakash.
