Visakhapatnam: The five Iranians who gave a slip to the Odisha police and intercepted by the Vizag rural police at Nakkapalle on Wednesday night, exposed the holes in the city security system, which has been beefed up for the ensuing International Fleet Review commencing from February 4.

Other than the city police, the Viziangaram and Srikakulam police also need to be blamed for allowing them to pass through their jurisdiction unscathed. The Srikakulam police need to be blamed more since the Iranian `tourists’ stayed overnight at a roadside dhaba, unquestioned despite their unique appearance.

They arrived in Bhubaneswar and sped away on January 25 after which the Odisha police sounded a red alert.

Odisha episode was published in all the leading newspapers in the front pages and yet the AP police did not show any enthusiasm though security was tightened in view of the impending visit of Prime Minister and President for the International Fleet Review.

When this correspondent asked the intelligence officials on Wednesday afternoon whether they received any alert and CCTV footage from Odisha, they replied in negative. The runaway tourists were caught few hours later.

“There is a security lapse as far as city police is concerned. The policemen manning the checkpost at the city entrance should have stopped the car, which had a Delhi number,’’ said a retired police officer.

The ‘tourists’ travelled 450 km from Bhubaneswar and spent one night in Srikakulam and yet they were caught just before crossing the district border, he added.

Police sources said this episode has wakened up the city police officials who directed the security wing to conduct random checks more seriously.
