Nellore: People should be sensitized in cutting down unnecessary expenditure in the Centrally sponsored housing schemes, said Dr Ashok Kumar Jain, Adviser to the Union Rural Development Ministry.

Jain along with District Collector M Janaki held a review meeting with officials on implementation of various welfare schemes in the district at Golden Jubilee Hall on Friday. He said that the Central government has started excellent initiatives in housing and sanitation across the country after obtaining feedback from the officials.

About 3 crore houses in rural areas and 2 crore in urban areas are required in the country, Jain stated. Speaking about sanctioning funds to beneficiaries for construction of houses, Ashok Kumar said the Centre is allocating Rs 70,000 for each house under Indira Awaas Yojana in which Rs 16,000 from National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme and Rs 12,000 from Swachh Bharat programme. Jain also said they had observed that beneficiaries were incurring unnecessary expenses in constructing the houses.

Officials should create awareness among the beneficiaries for constructing houses without any interruption, he said adding that construction should be qualitative with pre-fabrication. He also asked Ramachandra Reddy, who is Project Director of the Housing department, about the details of the housing schemes which are being implemented in the district. The senior official explained that a survey was conducted regarding demand for the houses and software has been developed for beneficiaries to apply online for new houses.

Talking about rural water supply, Ashok Kumar said that water should be supplied without fluoride content. He also suggested that beneficiaries were getting 60 man-days under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA), even though the government has been providing 100 days through the scheme.

The Collector explained about the housing and sanitation schemes which were in the progress in the district. District officials were present.
