Hyderabad: Former Union Minister P Chidambaram on Friday appeared as Senior Counsel before the High Court at Hyderabad in connection with the Y S Jaganmohan Reddy’s assets case. The former Minister was appearing for Punith Dalmia, MD Dalmia Cements, arrayed as one of the accused in the case before Justice Vilas Afzulpurkar.

The counsel for the petitioner pointed out that though a charge sheet was filed in the case, his client was still being summoned by the ED. He pointed out that the ED had power to summon an accused only till the stage of investigation. Though a charge sheet was filed, counsel said, his client was still being summoned to dispose before the ED against the law.

He said the ED can use the statements made by his client against him that went against the right of his client of not implicating himself in a case. “The right to remain silent is of paramount importance in such cases and authorities should respect the law and the rights of the accused in such matters,” Chidambaram said. The judge adjourned the matter to February 16 granting time to the ED to respond.
