Given the numerous benefits that a human body can acquire from cycling, citizens are taking to it more seriously than before. Cycling, which was not even considered a leisure time activity or hobby in the recent times, suddenly emerged as a fad among the city’s youth and elders. Various groups under different names have come up offering company to ride a bicycle as frequently as possible.

Vijayawada: Given the numerous benefits that a human body can acquire from cycling, citizens are taking to it more seriously than before. Cycling, which was not even considered a leisure time activity or hobby in the recent times, suddenly emerged as a fad among the city’s youth and elders. Various groups under different names have come up offering company to ride a bicycle as frequently as possible.

Cycling is the best alternative exercise for people who wish they cannot stain their knees to stay fit. Cycling offers a great respite from many problems besides toning up the lower body. Cycling is an effective exercise that helps one maintain fitness.

Moreover, in the scenario of increasing vehicles on road contributing to more pollution of sound and air, cycling is always cheap and beneficial way to travel.

Depending on the feasibility and interest, a large number of people including students, working professionals, doctors, lecturers, engineers and the retired seniors are making it a point to meet up at a place and go for a small ride on bicycle. On weekends, they go for a longer distance as well.

Groups like Active Bicyclers Association (ABA), Capital Cycling Club and Andhra Bicycling Club are a few that are very active and also are using the social network to mobilise others. Most of the clubs are headed by doctors who preach their patients and public to ride a bicycle to get into shape and stay fit.

Founder of the Capital Cycling Club Dr Satya Kumar says, “we have started the club long ago and are successfully continuing the activity. More than 100 are active participants in our club who meet up at a centre on wee hours everyday before we decide on a route to head. Members will have a special smart phone app that tracks down the location. Uniform jersey and head gears are also used by the members who insist on riding up to 20 km on a holiday.”

Meanwhile, the clubs are also taking out mega cycle rally to promote cycling and sought for official bicycle day in a week to sensitise the citizens. In the last two months, more than four rallies were organised by different associations promoting cycling for fitness and saving bucks.

General secretary of one of the oldest clubs, Bicycle Club of Vijayawada, V Satyanarayana said, “we have collaborated with city’s colleges to engage people in cycling activity. More number of students and colleges will be approached, such that they take to cycling as a mode of transportation at least one day in a week. The municipal corporation is also extending possible help in propagating it.”
