Visakhapatnam: The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation signed an agreement with the Jindal Infrastructure, Transportation, Fabrication (JITF) which will set up a waste-to-energy plant in Visakhapatnam.

The agreement was signed on the GVMC premises here on Wednesday. GVMC Commissioner Pravin Kumar said that after entering into an in-principle MoU with the JITF at the recently concluded Partnership Summit, they now signed the concession agreement.

After exchanging the documents, Pravin Kumar said the corporation has assured to supply 950 tonnes of solid waste per day to the plant, which would become operational within the next one and half years. The 15 MW plant would be constructed with about Rs 150 crore.

The corporation will provide land on a lease basis. The plant would be located at Gidijala village in Anandapuram mandal. There is also a power purchase agreement between the APEPDCL and the plant management,” the Commissioner added.

The city, spread over 533 square kilometres, generates about 1100 to 1200 metric tonnes of waste a day. Most of the solid waste is being shifted to Kapuluppada dumping yard for recycling.
