Yedlapadu (Guntur): Chilli stock that was stored in a private cold storage at Yedlapadu village caught fire on Wednesday. Stock worth crores of rupees was reduced to ashes and preliminary investigation points out short circuit as possible reason. However, no injuries or human loss was reported.

According to police, stocks of chilli belonging to ITC and farmers caught fire in one of the four chambers of the cold storage unit. About 30,000 gunny bags of ITC and 4,000 bags of farmers were stocked in the cold storage at the time of the incident. Thick white smoke was seen billowing from the ware house, which made it impossible for the fire personnel to enter into the chambers.

They couldn’t stand the hot and burning odour of the burnt chillies. Fire tenders from Chilakaluripet, Narasaraopet and Guntur rushed to the site and were fighting the flames from outside. Unofficial estimates by ITC put the total loss at around Rs 10 crore. To save the remaining stock, fire personnel have broken the walls of the warehouse to retrieve the un-burnt stock.
