Nelaturu (Nellore): The State which was facing severe shortage of power during 2014 is self sufficient now with regard to power generation, APGENCO Chairman and Managing Director K Vijayanand has said.

Briefing about milestones of AP Genco at the plant premises on Friday, in connection with dedication of 2X800 MW units of Sri Damodaram Sanjeevaiah Thermal Power Station at Nelatur in Muthukur mandal and laying foundation for the third unit on Saturday, he said there was no need for the State to go in for short-term purchases and was fully equipped to sell the power to other States too.

He said the government was purchasing around 500 MW of power for meeting short-term demand every year and would discontinue from May this year. The current power supply in the State is 155 MU per day and it is likely to increase to 165-175 MU, and the government will also be able to supply additional 20 MU, he said. He also expressed confidence over meeting the demand in the ensuing summer.

He said there would be no trouble for domestic, agriculture and industrial supply due to increased power generation as of February 2016. He reminded that there was a shortage of 22.5 MU per day during 2014 and they had overcome such situation. He said the PLFA in the State is 80.71 last year which is far better than many States across the country and said it was possible with operationalising numerous plants to achieve self-sufficiency.

When asked about measures being taken for reducing pollution levels in the coastal areas of Nellore district which would be left with ash ponds at tens of thermal power plants at Nelatur supercritical thermal plant has washed coal and imported varieties would reduce pollution.

He said efforts were being made to reduce the pollution by incorporating advanced technology, and had pointed out that ash generation came down to 27.5 per cent Nelatur supercritical thermal plant.
