Kandukur: The farmers of Nellore and Prakasam districts created a tense situation on Wednesday evening while demanding for release of water from the right canal of the Rallapadu reservoir, which goes through the two districts. The officials pacified the agitating farmers with a promise to make maximum water available in the reservoir to the farmers in the two districts.

The right canal of the Rallapadu reservoir supplies water for irrigation needs to the farmers of Prakasam and Nellore districts. The canal starts and ends in Prakasam district, but goes through three villages in Nellore district. Due to drought conditions, the water level in the reservoir dropped to 4.2 feet, and raised tension in the farmers of Prakasam district who needs water for about 20 more days for the paddy.

As the water level is steeping further, the farmers from the downstream areas kept demanding the irrigation officials to release water to them immediately. Fearing that the water may not be available to them, the farmers of the Makkinavaripalem village in Nellore district shut down the gates of the canal in their village, blocking flow of the water further.

Learning about the blockage, the farmers from Prakasam and Nellore districts reached the canal gates and started a verbal duel. The police, politicians and officials tried to convince the farmers and settle the issue. Divi Sivaram, former MLA of Kandukur, tried to reach the spot, but the farmers of Nellore district objected his motive. The MLA of Udayagiri, Bollineni Ramarao, spoke to him over phone and asked not to enter Nellore district as the was tense.

The RDO of Kanudkur Mallikarjuna, RDO of Kavali Lakshmi Narasimham, Kandukur DSP Srinivasa Rao and DSP of Kavali reached the village and discussed with the farmers. The Prakasam district irrigation officials including the CE Veerraju, SE Sarada, DE Srinivasa Murthy also joined the discussions and assured the farmers of Nellore district that water would be released to their needs also. After the repeated promises of the irrigation officials, the farmers pacified and removed the obstacles and opened the gates of the right canal.

The Prakasam district irrigation CE, Veerraju said, “We would try our best to release water to the farmers in the downstream considering the level of the reservoir. We promise to save the crops in the both districts by releasing water to the downstream, and there is no need to panic by the farmers.”
