Kurnool: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday reiterated his government’s commitment to empowerment of women. Participating in the International Women’s Day celebrations in the city, he listed out the initiatives taken by the Telugu Desam government for women’s safety and their economic uplift.

Naidu underlined the need to promote girl child education in a big way to eradicate illiteracy in the State. Every house should have an individual toilet to protect the privacy of women. All houses should have LPG connections to free women from the drudgery of cooking food on earthen ovens using firewood.

An attitudinal change should be brought about among parents that raising a girl child was no more a burden. If proper education was provided, girls could excel in any field on par with boys. It was evident with the increase in number of women employees in the IT sector. Women should be encouraged to prove their mettle in all fields to
end gender discrimination in society, he said.

Highlighting the welfare measures taken by the TDP government, he said the State Women’s Commission was constituted to check the increase in atrocities against women in recent times. It was proposed to impart training in martial arts to girls from the school level to enable them to defend themselves from eve-teasers and perpetrators of atrocities. A socio-economic awareness would be created among rural people to eradicate child
marriages.

Institutional deliveries would be promoted to curb mother and infant mortality rate. Steps were also taken to strengthen Anganwadi Centres. A sum of Rs 3,000 crore would be allocated as a capital fund for the empowerment of DWCRA women in the State, he said.

The Chief Minister vowed to develop Kurnool as a Smart City and as an industrial hub in Rayalaseema. He urged people to extend their full support to his government in its efforts to put Andhra Pradesh on top in economic development in the country despite the resource crunch post bifurcation.

Later, he administered a pledge to women of savings groups that they would strive to achieve empowerment. Nandyal MLA Bhuma Nagi Reddy, who joined the TDP recently, MLAs, MLCs and other people’s representatives participated in the Women’s Day celebrations.
