New Delhi: A delegation of APCC, led by its president N Raghuveera Reddy, sought the intervention of the President Pranab Mukherjee, here on Monday, to help State secure special category status as promised by the BJP and the TDP on the floor of the Parliament during bifurcation. About 300 Congress leaders from the State impressed upon the President to prevail over the Union government for swift action on that front.
In a memorandum, they recalled that when the then prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh had said the special status would be given for the truncated State for a period of five years, current Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu and other BJP leaders demanded it be extended for 10 years.
Later the delegation also met JD (U) leaders Sharad Yadav and Nitish Kumar, Sharad Pawar of the NCP, D Raja of the CPI and sought their support. They reportedly extended support to the cause provided if Congress MPs raise the issue in the Parliament.
Meanwhile, tragedy struck the delegation when one of the district leaders K Venkaiah, suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away at a local hospital. Raghuveera Reddy and others rushed to the hospital and condoled his death. They also made arrangements to shift the body to Guntur. Earlier in the day, the delegation visited Raj Ghat and Shakti Sthal to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi and former prime minister Indira Gandhi respectively.
