Vijayawada: Representatives of Backward Classes Associations took out a huge rally here on Monday and staged a dharna near the Lenin centre demanding that the government should enact a law related to the BC sub plan being implemented in the State. Members of Backward Classes organisations from all the 13 districts of the state participated in the rally and dharna.

  • Seek an allocation of over Rs 10,000 cr in the next year’s State budget
  • 27 per cent reservation in private sector

The dharna was organised under the aegis of Private Rangamlo Reservation Sadhana Porata Committee. Speaking on the occasion, MLC Boddu Nageswara Rao said the backward classes constitute 52 per cent of the population and they were living in deplorable condition with poverty. There is a steep fall in the income of artisans and backward classes due to globalisation and modernization.

He said successive governments were announcing budgetary allocations but were not releasing the funds for the welfare of backward classes. He demanded that the government increase the budgetary allocation to more than 10,000 crore in the next financial year and provide legal status for the BC sub plan.

Former deputy mayor V Umamaheswara Rao has criticised the successive governments for not taking measures for the development of backward classes. He demanded that residential schools should be opened in all mandals of the state for the BC students. He alleged the BC students are staying in the hostels without any basic amenities.

He asked the government to take measures for implementation of 27 per cent reservation in private sector since most jobs are available in the private sector due to globalisation in recent years. Other leaders demanded that the government enact a law to give social security to the backward classes in the State on par with the SCs and STs. BC Sub-Plan and Private Rangamlo Reservation Sadhana Porata Committee convener M Ramakrishna and others attended the rally and dharna.
