Vempalle (Kadapa): With the prevailing severe drought conditions, the farmers in the district were selling their cattle to the slaughter houses. Taking advantage of the situation, middlemen are purchasing cattle from farmers at a lesser price and selling it for higher cost to slaughter houses. Domestic animals are being transported in 10 to 15 lorries every day from the places like Pulivendula, Yerraguntla,
Mydukuru and Proddatur.
The officials are turning blind eye towards the issue of illegal transportation of cattle to slaughter houses. There are allegations that lorry drivers are paying bribes to police and revenue officials to continue their business unabated. Lorry drivers are reportedly offering a bribe of Rs 500 for every trip to each police station and the same amount at every check post while transporting buffaloes, cows, oxen and even calves to Chennai. Lorry owners are bribing police stations and check posts in Kadapa, Vempalle, Chakrayapet and Rayachoti as the lorries have to pass through these towns to reach Chennai. But, the farmers are lamenting that they have been selling their cattle out of desperation due to failure of paddy crop.
Ramalinga Reddy from Vempalle said he had sold 3 cows at throwaway price to a middleman as he could not purchase grass to them. Pulivendula ASP Amburajan said that he will take stern action against police personnel, who have been taking bribes from the lorry drivers after ordering a probe. But, the revenue officials are saying that they are not aware of the cattle being transported to slaughter houses in the district. Chakrayapet Tahsildar Nageswar said that he will take action if anyone files a complaint.
