Vaccine to Rotavirus, which was only available at private hospitals, will now be available at all government hospitals under Universal Immunisation Programme. Speaking to mediapersons here, on Thursday joint director of child health and immunisation, Vanisri Saride said that children suffering from severe diarrhea can now be treated with Rotavirus vaccine. 

Hyderabad: Vaccine to Rotavirus, which was only available at private hospitals, will now be available at all government hospitals under Universal Immunisation Programme. Speaking to media person's here, on Thursday joint director of child health and immunisation, Vanisri Saride said that children suffering from severe diarrhea can now be treated with Rotavirus vaccine.

To be administered as a part of Universal Immunisation Programme

“The vaccine will be administered at government hospitals under routine immunisation schedule of the Universal Immunisation Programme, soon,” she added. She along with other experts brief newsmen on importance of new vaccines in reducing child mortality and improving child survival.

UNICEF health specialist Dr Sanjeev Upadhaya said, “Rotavirus alone is responsible for 40 percent of the severe diarrhea cases and it kills 1 child every 4 minutes in India. We are confident that the introduction of this vaccine will bring down the Infant Mortality Rate in the State.”

New and more effective vaccines like Rotavirus vaccine, Inactivated Polio Vaccine and bivalent oral polio vaccines, not available in the public health programme earlier, are being introduced in a phased manner by Union government. The Rotavirus vaccine was nationally launched in the Universal Immunization Programme in Odisha on March 26.
