The image of AU as a premier higher educational institution in AP may take a beating if urgent measures are not taken to streamline the varsity administration as it was mired in corruption scandals in recent times.
Visakhapatnam: Much to the astonishment of academia in the State, Andhra University does not figure in the 'India Rankings 2016' released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development a few days ago. The reason was the Andhra University authorities failed to submit the reports sought by the HRD Ministry for evaluation under the National Institutional Ranking Framework for selection of the top 100 universities and institutes of engineering, management and pharmacy in the country. The criteria for the all-India level ranking included teaching /learning resources, research, graduation outcome, outreach/inclusivity, and perception.
The Andhra University authorities drew flak from all quarters for their failure to ensure the participation of the 90-year-old premier higher educational institution in the first ever evaluation exercise undertaken by the HRD Ministry. It is a matter of disgrace for Andhra University which got the best grade in the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) appraisal.
Sri Venkateswara University of Tirupati, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Kakinada and Yogi Vemana University of Kadapa stood first, second and third respectively in Andhra Pradesh in the rankings. At the all India level, SVU, JNTUK and YVU were ranked 63rd, 69th and 92nd respectively.
There is no doubt that AU spread over 500 acres in the heart of Vizag city with focus on academic excellence and research would have got the best place at the national level if it participated in the India Rankings. Students of AU lamented over lack of enthusiasm among the varsity authorities to participate in the India Rankings of the HRD Ministry to enhance its reputation at the national level. It is learnt that Human Resources Development Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao vented his ire at AU authorities for their failure to ensure the university’s participation in the India Rankings. Expressing regrets over non-participation in the India Rankings, AU in-charge Vice-Chancellor EA Narayana said “The officials who were busy in getting development funds due to the university, failed to furnish the reports sought by the HRD Ministry on time.”
