Nellore: Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana said the State government is implementing welfare schemes for the poor keeping ideologies of Dr BR Ambedkar in mind. He participated in a function which was organised at Kasturba Kalakshetram here on Thursday in connection with 125th birth anniversary of Dr Ambedkar.

Speaking on the occasion, Narayana said that the government is constructing 6 lakh houses for the poor. The government also has taken decision to construct 125 feet statue in Amaravati and a theme park in 15 acres of land, he said. Even though the State government had presented a deficit budget of Rs 16,000 crore in the first year after bifurcation, the Minister said that the government is committed to welfare of SC, ST, BC and minorities and for their economic growth.

Narayana said that the government had allocated Rs 8,724 crore under SC sub-plan and Rs 3,099 crore under ST sub-plan this year. 12,000 employees from Hyderabad are shifting to Vijayawada by June this year, he said and added per capita income in Andhra Pradesh is Rs 1.07 lakh where as it has been Rs 1.35 lakh to Rs 1.40 lakh in Telangana and Tamil Nadu states. Major source of revenue for Telangana is from Hyderabad city and the AP had lost it after bifurcation, he explained.

District Collector M Janaki said that they had sanctioned Rs 1.58 crore for 601 meritorious students under Best Available Scheme during 2015-16. Three students have been selected under Ambedkar Overseas Vidya Nidhi scheme for pursuing their studies in US varsities, she said. The Collector said that they have been taking measures to fill up SC/ST backlog posts in the district shortly.

City Mayor SK Abdul Aziz, MLC V N Reddy, Nellore rural MLA K Sridhar Reddy, Gudur legislator P Sunil Kumar, Sullurpet MLA K Sanjeevaiah, and others spoke. Joint Collectors A Md Imtiyaz and R S Rajkumar, and other officials were present. Further, Minister Narayana laid foundation for construction of 10,040 houses with Rs 447 crore under ‘Housing for All’ scheme at the stadium premises. Earlier, a huge rally was organised in the city on the occasion. The Minister garlanded the statue of Ambedkar at VRC Centre.
