Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakha City Committee of CPM condemning the Cabinet’s decision to privatise all 193 Urban Health Centres (UHCs) in the State under Public-Private-Participation mode, demanded the government to rollback its decision as all UHCs will be turned into the properties of private organisations.

Party city secretary B Ganga Rao told reporters here on Tuesday that the privatisation of UHSc will have a direct effect on the health of the poor. He said that there are 16 such dispensaries in the limits of Greater Visakha of where there are only seven permanent doctors and there is no medical lab equipment.

He alleged that the GVMC is not even spending Rs 1 crore on UHCs from its annual estimated budget of Rs 2,800 crore and diverting the funds for other works. Stating that already private organisations have bagged the contract of conducting medical tests in the government hospitals State-wide, he charged that the TDP government is mainly focusing on privatisation of all the government hospitals in a phased manner.

As per the norms of National Urban Health Mission, he said that an Urbah Health Centre should be set up for every 20,000 population and thus, the Greater Visakha city should have at least 100 dispensaries, he added.
