Vijayawada: With four Rajya Sabha seats from the State to fall vacant soon, lobbying has picked up in the TDP circles and the aspirants are trying to catch the attention of the party national president N Chandrababu Naidu.

  • As four MPs from the State set to retire soon, both TDP and YSRCP are working out strategies to zero in on their nominees K Ramamohan Rao, T G Venkatesh, Anam Ramanarayana Reddy are key contenders from the ruling party

Even some of the leaders who had recently joined the party from Congress like Anam Ramanarayana Reddy are said to be in the race. Congress MPs Jairam Ramesh and JD Seelam, Union minister of State for Science and Technology Y Sujana Chowdary (TDP) and Union Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitaraman (BJP) would be retiring soon.

The TDP on its own has enough strength to win three seats. The party is working out strategies to bag the fourth seat as well as it expects that more MLAs from YSRCP would be joining them soon and that would help them clinch the fourth seat as well.

Those in the race for the Rajya Sabha tickets are the special representative to Andhra Pradesh in New Delhi K Ramamohan Rao, Kurnool leader and former minister T G Venkatesh, Anam Ramanarayana Reddy and party leader Mullapudi Renuka.

However, sources say that TDP would agree for re-nomination of Nirmala Seetaraman. It remains to be seen whether Sujana Chowdary would be given a second term or not. Though majority feels that Sujana Chowdary would get a second term, the opinion is divided.

As per rules a Rajya Sabha nominee should have the support of 44 MLAs to win the election. Even after the crossing over of 12 members from YSRCP to Congress the major Opposition party still has enough strength to win one seat. YSRCP leader V Vijaya Sai Reddy is said to be candidate from the party for the lone seat.
