​Eluru: Excise and Prohibition Deputy Commissioner YB Bhaskar Rao has said that West Godavari district will be declared as a complete arrack-free district by May first week. He was reviewing the Navodayam programme, which was aimed at creating awareness among the public on the ban on arrack in the district on Tuesday at his office with the excise officials.

The Deputy Commissioner said that the excise officials have been conducting raids in 182 villages, where arrack production was identified in the district. He said through Navodayam programme, the officials have created awareness among the public and so far 179 villages have been identified as arrack-free villages.

Another three villages in Buttayagudem, Chintalapudi and Polavaram mandals will also be declared as arrack-free villages soon. Bhaskar Rao further stated that the Excise Minister Kollu Ravindra would participate in the programme during May first week and District Collector K Bhaskar would declare the district as arrack-free.

The Navodayam programme was started on February 1 in the district to curb the arrack menace in the district, he added. He said that the excise officials had conducted special drive in 39 villages where highest crime rate recorded and controlled the arrack production in those villages. He clarified that it was not correct to say that a tribe has a right to manufacture arrack.

He said the excise patrolling teams were on the look out to control the arrack menace in the villages. He warned that if anyone conducted the manufacturing or sale of arrack, they would be punished under PD Act. Assistant Commissioner of Excise KAB Sastry, Circle Inspectors Vaikuntha Rao and Srinivasa Chowdary participated in the meeting.
