Hyderabad: The need to meet the demand of supplying drinking water to 9,576 habitations that were identified as vulnerable for drinking water had turned into a herculean task for the officials of Rural Water Supply (RWS) with rising mercury levels and scarcity of water resources.
According to sources in the Panchayat Raj and RWS departments, of the total vulnerable habitations, the officials have been struggling to supply water to about 4,122 habitations in the State. Chittoor, Prakasam, Kadapa and Anantapur were a few districts, where the soaring temperatures have been giving a tough time for the officials in ensuring regular supply of drinking water.
The State government has sanctioned Rs 126 crore to the RWS as a part of summer contingency plan to supply drinking water. Besides, 918 private water sources have been hired spending Rs 2.35 crore. The contingency plan has also given nod to the department to flushing of 6,740 bore wells, deepening 4,645 bore wells, in addition to deepening 102 pen wells and filling of 408 SS tanks.
Speaking to The Hans India, a senior official said, “As of now the department has been monitoring the water scarcity on
daily basis.
According to the water supply status till April 25, water is being supplied to about 708 habitations in the State. Guntur has the highest number of 202 habitations to which water is being supplied daily, followed by Prakasam standing second highest with 169 habitations needing water supply. Anantapur and Chittoor districts have the third and fourth highest number of habitations which were being supplied drinking water on
daily basis.”
Sources said that in terms of vulnerable habitations of drinking water, Chittoor stand first with 2,305 habitations, followed by Kadapa with 623, Anantapur with 367, Prakasam with 119; that apart, there were also habitations reeling under water shortage in double digit numbers in Nellore, Kurnool, Vizianagaram districts.
“Water levels in the existing summer storage tanks, other water sources have been affected as several areas in the State have been reeling under acute drought conditions. Following this, it has been increasingly becoming tough to meet the demand that is going up due to the soaring temperatures,” the sources added.
