Srikakulam: The district medical and health department has sounded high alert in Sitampeta Agency in the wake of 10 anthrax cases that were reported from Agency areas in Visakhapatnam.

Speaking to The Hans India, District Immunisation Officer Dr Bagadi Jagannadham said that measures are being taken to check the spread of the disease.

He said anthrax affects animals and later spreads to humans through spores due to either inhalation or consumption of infected meat. He said a medical camp would be held for the villagers and they would be educated about burial of dead animals and taking other safety measures.

He said, “The problem with anthrax bacteria is that they can stay in the soil for 60-70 years or more. So, when animals eat the grass, they swallow the spores and get infected.

Tribal villagers often eat the cattle without properly cooking and sometimes they cut the animal. If there's some abrasions on their skin that come in contact with the flesh of the infected animal, human beings too get affected by anthrax."

Deputy DM&HO Dr M P V Naik said adequate measures have been taken to check the spread of the disease to surrounding villages by stepping up surveillance activity, intensifying IEC (information, education, communication) among villagers.

He said staff for continuous surveillance has been arranged at all 27 primary health centres (PHCs), eight community health centres (CHCs) and two Area hospitals in the Agency.

He said Sitampeta Agency has seven lakh population, of which 1.60 lakh are tribals. He said apart from creating awareness among the tribals in the Agency areas of the district on not consuming meat from dead carcasses, the authorities concerned will undertake massive vaccination of cattle.
