Rajamahendravaram: Muppala Subba Rao, member of AP Bar Council said that the truth behind the stampede at Pushkar Ghat in the city on the first day of Godavari Pushkaralu is unlikely to come out despite the appointment of a one-man commission headed by retired High Court Judge CY Somayajulu. He said that he was furnished with false and error-ridden information, when he filed RTI Act.

At least 28 people died and over 100 were injured in the stampede that took place at Pushkar Ghat on July 14, 2015 due to closure of the gates at the venue, to facilitate making of a short film, while Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was taking a holy dip in the river.

Yielding to the demand from various quarters, the State government constituted the one-man commission on September 29, 2015 to look into the causes that led to the stampede. Though the commission was asked to submit its report within six months, there is little progress in its inquiry.

It is learnt that the district officials are trying to cover up the matter by claiming that they did not have the video footage of the incident though 170 closed circuit TV cameras and aerial cameras were used to cover Godavari Pushkaralu.

The failure of the State Government to file its response within the stipulated time given by the commission also reflected the fact that it was not really committed to unravel the truth pertaining to the stampede.

Though Subba Rao also sought information pertaining to the Pushkaram arrangements from the district Collectorate under the under the RTI Act, there was no response to his plea.

The information provided by the SP’s office under the RTI Act was said to be false. Speaking to The Hans India, CPM leader Arun said, “The non-provision of all relevant information pertaining to Pushkaralu arrangements to the AP Bar Council member under the RTI Act, highlighted the moves of the district administration to conceal the facts.

The appointment of the one-man commission to probe the stampede also seems to be an eye wash as the State government is not sincere to unravel the truth and punishing the guilty.’’
