Vijayawada: “Blood pressure is the reason behind 40 per cent of deaths caused among people above 65 years of age. Deaths caused due to BP are more when compared to that caused by cancer or tuberculosis,” said Dr P Guru Prasad here on Saturday. He addressed the health education programme organised by Vasavya Nursing Home on ‘Blood Pressure’.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Prasad said that BP did not show any symptoms for the person to identify if he/she was affected. “Many of the patients are unaware of being affected with BP. Very often, people who do not experience fatigue, stress, heart pain, and headache might have BP, which is termed as a silent killer.

Obesity, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking and irregular lifestyle can cause BP among young people as well. BP can be contained by following a good diet, practicing physical exercises and not being stressed out. Patients with blood pressure should use medicine to put it under control throughout their life.

Many of them discontinue medicines after a while, which might worsen the risks further. Youngsters above 20 years of age with BP as hereditary should go for an annual check up,” advised Dr Prasad. Former national president of Indian Medical Association Dr G Samaram and Dr Maru were present among others.
