Rayadurgam (Anantapur): Ramon Magsaysay awardee Rajendra Singh known as the 'Waterman of India’ visited the sand dunes in Rayadurgam area including Dargahonnur and Tumbiganur in Bommanahal mandal on Sunday. He was accompanied by Government Chief Whip Kalva Sreenivas, RDO Rama Rao, and other officials.

  • 'Waterman' Rajendra Singh says rainwater sheds can be built within the rivers to facilitate percolation of rainwater into the underground
  • States that considering future needs, people should use water judiciously, rejuvenate water resources

Addressing the gathering, Rajendra Singh said that the sand dunes in Rayadurgam area resembled conditions in Rajasthan. The deadness of Vedavati and Hagari rivers is a reflection of similar conditions in Rajasthan. However, he observed that Anantapur records three times more rainfall than Rajasthan and therefore is better placed than the desert state.

Rajendra Singh said that rainwater sheds can be built within the rivers to facilitate percolation of rainwater into the underground. He said that in Rajasthan rainwater sheds were built in rivers and succeeded in percolation of rainwater into the underground of the rivers. In Rajasthan, water is judiciously used and crops that do not require much water are cultivated, he added.

He stressed the need to cultivate water-efficient crops. Government Chief Whip Kalva Sreenivasulu stated that Vedavati and Hagari were once lively rivers but were dead in the course of time. He said, “The Neeru-Chettu programme of the government is aimed at conservation of water resources and recharging of groundwater. This has improved the groundwater levels in the State.”

He praised Rajendra Singh as a great man who was instrumental in the revival of seven dead rivers in Rajasthan and came to be known as the 'Waterman of India’. He said that an action plan would be drawn based on the advice of Rajendra Singh on water conservation in the district.

District Collector Kona Sasidhar was also present at the power point presentation given by Rajendra Singh on water conservation measures implemented in Rajasthan.
